What is cerebral palsy?

This disease is a group of neuromotor disorders that occur during or after pregnancy and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination due to an injury or abnormality in brain development, either before, during or after birth.

As we have indicated, this is the leading cause of childhood disability. It is a non-progressive condition. This means that it will not get worse when the child is older, but some problems may become more evident.

What causes cerebral palsy is that the brain cannot or has impediments in sending messages to the muscles, hindering the brain’s ability to control movement, maintain posture and balance. In addition to motor disorders, it is also associated with other sensory, perceptual and psychological disorders.

Risk factor’s

There are some medical conditions or situations that can occur during pregnancy and childbirth which can increase a baby’s risk of being born with cerebral palsy. These include:

Low birth weight and premature birth. Multiple birth. Infections during pregnancy. Exposure to toxic substances. Mothers with thyroid abnormalities, excess protein in the urine or seizures.

From the health sector, what must be done is to work to guarantee the basic rights of this type of patients and end the stigma that is created from this condition, thus building a society informed about what this condition is and is not.
