How many points should a team have?
The complexities of the points table are such that in different seasons, we have seen different minimum cutoff points for qualification into the playoffs. In such a situation, the question arises that after winning how many matches, a team’s place in the playoffs will be confirmed. Usually, 16 points is taken as the benchmark since there are 10 teams, as a team with 16 points is almost certain to qualify. Due to this many times the net run rate also comes down.
Minimum marks kept changing from year to year
In the inaugural season of IPL, 15 points proved to be the cutoff mark. Delhi Daredevils was the fourth team to qualify with 15 points. In IPL 2009, the battle for a place in the playoffs came down to net run rate. Deccan Chargers and Kings XI Punjab both had 14 points on their account, with the latter qualifying for the playoffs due to better NRR. In IPL 2011 also, the matter got stuck on net run rate. Despite having 12 points in IPL 2012, Chennai had qualified on the basis of better NRR.
What was the scene of the last two seasons?
In 2022, Gujarat Titans became the first team to qualify for the playoffs with 20 points. Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants were at the second and third positions with 18 points each, followed by RCB at the fourth position with 16 points. Gujarat was once again the first team to qualify for the playoffs in 2023. CSK, LSJ and Mumbai Indians had also qualified on 17 points.
