Last year, 6,033 organ and tissue transplants were performed in Mexico, an amount that represented a 40 percent increase compared to the previous year, 2021, as reported by José Salvador Aburto Morales, general director of the National Transplant Center (Cenatra).

Of the total transplants performed in 2022, 3,061 were from cornea; 2,712 kidneys (1,987 from living donors and 725 from deceased donors); 238 liver donors (20 from living donors and 218 from deceased donors) and 42 heart donors.

20 thousand patients were waiting for transplants

In Mexico, 20,016 patients were waiting of organ or tissue transplants in 2022. Of these, 15,454 required a kidney; 4 thousand 267 cornea; 248 liver; 30 need a heart and 17 need two organs or more.

A transplant consists of move an organtissue or a set of cells from one person (donor) to another (recipient), or one part of the body to another in the same patient, to replace a diseased or injured organ or tissue with a healthy one.

The donor must register on the Cenatra website

When a person wants to express their desire to donate, they can enter the Register of Voluntary Donors on the Cenatra page. It is always essential to inform family members and close people. Likewise, if the donor changes his decision, before dying, he must tell the family.

It is also important to note that people with mental illness and who cannot freely express their will cannot be donors under any type of concept.

In Mexico, donation and transplantation are regulated in the General Health Law in the fourteenth title and by the Regulations of the General Health Law on the matter, which express the prohibition of trade, trafficking and tourism of organs, tissues and cells. What is clear is that the figures are changing in the country and, each time, there is greater awareness about organ and tissue donation in the country.
