Independence in Guatemala 2024

It is 2024, Guatemala will celebrate the 203rd anniversary of its independencean event that marked the beginning of a new era. Since that time September 15, 1821when the heroes signed the Act of IndependenceGuatemala has commemorated this day as a symbol of freedom and sovereignty.

This date was not only significant for Guatemala, but also for the other nations that made up the Captaincy General of Guatemala: Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, which also celebrate their independence on the same day.

A bit of history

The events leading up to Guatemala’s independence were marked by growing social, economic and political discontent. From the late 18th century, the ideas of the Enlightenment and the independence movements in Latin America began to influence Creole elites and popular sectors. The Mexican War of Independence, which began in 1810, had a direct impact on the region, particularly on the Kingdom of Guatemala, which included what are now several Central American countries.

Between 1811 and 1813, several attempts at insurrection were recorded, such as the movement led by José Matías Delgado and Nicolás Aguilar in San Salvador and the Belén conspiracy in 1813 in Guatemala CityThese movements, although unsuccessful, reflected a growing desire for autonomy. Events such as the Napoleonic invasion of Spain and the subsequent political instability in Europe weakened Spanish control over its American colonies. This, together with the spread of liberal ideas and the example of other regions that had achieved independence, paved the way for the peaceful proclamation of the independence of the Captaincy General of Guatemala from the Spanish Crown on September 15, 1821.
