The referee of the Extremeño Committee Jesús Gil Manzano has been chosen to referee a high-tension Classic while in which the Balearic Guillermo Cuadra Fernández will be in charge of the VAR.
The match refereeing team, corresponding to the eleventh day of LaLiga EA Sports, will be completed by Diego Barbero Sevilla as VAR assistant, Ángel Nevado Rodríguez and Javier Martínez Nicolás as assistants and Manuel García Gómez as fourth referee, according to the appointments announced this Thursday by the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
His appointment has generated controversy. Gil Manzano has only directed two classics. The first was in 2014 and ended with a 3-1 in favor of Real Madrid. The second was in 2021 and also ended with a 2-1 white victory in a match that was played in Valdebebas.
His appointment has not sat well with the culés who still hold a grudge against him for having sent off Robert Lewandowski in Pamplona last season. The Polish forward of the Barça team put his hand to his nose in a gesture considered contempt and saw the red card.

In 2018, with the arrival of the VAR, the RFEF, Laliga and the Technical Committee of referees reached an agreement on the emoluments of referees and assistants in professional football that remains in force this season pending a new negotiation.
Under this agreement, Spanish referees became the best paid in the world. The salary increase in the First Division amounted to 53% of the salary, and referees began to earn from 193,000 to 296,000 euros per season. In the Second Division, the increase brought the annual salary to a figure of around 120,000 euros.
This money is divided into several sections: referees earn a monthly fixed amount of 12,500 euros, whether they referee a match or not; Furthermore, for each match conducted on the field of play they earn 4,200 euros, while, for being the VAR referee, they earn 2,100 euros per game. Second Division referees also have a monthly salary, in their case around 6,000 euros per month, to which 1,800 euros must be added per match conducted on the pitch, plus another 900 if they are a VAR referee.
International parties
Those who are international also have an extra. A Champions League referee earns 7,000 euros per game. UEFA pays this fee to all referees who referee Europe’s top club competition.
As for the World Cups, the figure is not negligible either. In the last 2018 World Cup in Russia, FIFA established emoluments for referees of 57,000 euros, to which almost 2,500 euros were added per match refereed. For those attending, the prize was set at 20,000 euros for the World Cup and approximately 1,600 extra for each match.
In the case of Gil Manzano, he could be the referee representing Spain in the next Euro Cup, which will mean a considerable extra to a salary that already places Spanish referees as the best paid in the world.
