Düsseldorf Eight million tons of plastic end up in the sea every year. And there are more and more. That’s the finding of a new study by a Dutch research group recently published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Due to the currents of the oceans, the plastic collects in huge carpets in the middle of the sea. There are already five of them. And given the growth in population on Earth, there are likely to be more in the years to come.

The whole thing is not only bad for the oceans, the environment and ecosystems – the huge amounts of plastic also have health consequences for people. Companies like Ocean Cleanup or One Earth One Ocean are now removing thousands of tons of plastic waste from the sea. A good thing at first glance. Nevertheless, scientists also warn of the negative consequences of the activities of such associations.

How much garbage is really floating in the sea, what are the consequences and what helps against it? That’s what the new episode of Handelsblatt Green & Energy is about with Melanie Bergmann from the Alfred Wegener Institute and Günther Bonin, founder and managing director of the One Earth One Ocean association.

More: Is that still weather – or already climate change?
