A prize money of Rs.347 crore was awarded to the Argentina team that won the Football World Cup.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup, which started on November 20 amid huge expectations, ended yesterday with a sensational final. In this final, which was full of excitement until the last minute, the Argentina team led by Messi defeated the French team in a penalty shoot-out and won the trophy.

This sports festival, which has been going on for about a month and ended yesterday, is not just entertainment for the people but also a business that rakes in crores of money. Participating teams in the series, which has a business worth several hundred crores, are awarded prize money based on their position.

The total prize money for the 2018 World Cup increased from USD 358 million in the 2014 World Cup to USD 400 million. With this amount added another 40 million dollars, this time FIFA has given a total of 440 million dollars as a gift. Its value is around 3,640 crores in Indian rupees.

Out of this total prize money, the winning team of Argentina will be awarded around 347 crore rupees (US$ 42 million) in prize money. A prize money of around 248 crore rupees (US$ 30 million) will be awarded to the French team, who lost in the final and finished second in the series.

3rd, 4th place – Rs.222, Rs.205 crores

Also, Croatia and Morocco, who finished third and fourth in the series, will receive Rs 222 crore and Rs 205 crore (US$ 27 million and 25 million), respectively.

Apart from these, each of the fifth to eighth placed teams will receive Rs 144 crore (US$ 17 million) each, while the ninth to sixteenth placed teams will receive Rs 110 crore (US$ 13 million) each.

Seventeenth to thirty-second place teams are awarded US$9 million (about Rs. 74 crore) each. In addition, each qualifying team receives USD 1.5 million for production costs prior to the tournament.

The prize money awarded to the winning team in the last World Cup in 1994 was four million dollars. In a span of 28 years it has risen to USD 42 million. Last year in 2014, the trophy was awarded 35 million USD to the winning team and 25 million USD to the runner-up team. Notably, the prize money rose to $38 million and $28 million respectively in the 2018 World Cup.
