The study, published in the journal “Science of The Total Environment”, shows that bacteria and endotoxins present in marine aerosols, these micro-droplets that generate waves, activate receptors and regulatory factors of the human immune system. So regular exposure to sea air would reduce the body’s inflammatory reactions.

To reach these conclusions, the researchers exposed human cell cultures to marine aerosols, collected naturally and reproduced artificially. They found a direct correlation between the concentration of bacteria and endotoxins in the sea air and the intensity of the immune response.

This discovery could explain in particular why the inhabitants of the Italian coast seem to have had better protection against Covid-19 than their counterparts living further inland,” explains the VLIZ.
