A so-called gender-critical movement has been forming for years, fueling hatred against trans people. Some have turned away. We met her.

When a young biology doctoral student was supposed to give a lecture at Berlin’s Humboldt University on July 2, her name was completely unknown to the general public. The next day, Marie-Luise Vollbrecht was considered an iconic victim of the so-called woker cancel culture. In addition to the ultra-conservative media, prominent supporters contributed to her sudden fame, from the queer taz author Jan Feddersen to the now resigned President of the PEN Center Germany, Deniz Yücel. The latter defended Vollbrecht against “aggressive relentlessness on the part of transgender activists”.
