A new feature film by Düsseldorf-based director Wim Wenders, “Perfect Days”, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 25, is filmed in Japan and tells the story of a Japanese public toilet cleaner. The director’s second work presented at the competition is a documentary about the famous German artist Anselm Kiefer.

The film “Perfect Days” brought Wim Wenders a lot of flattering words from film critics and viewers in Cannes. “It came from deep inside my soul,” the 77-year-old director said of the film project on Friday, May 26, at a press conference, also mentioning co-writer Takuma Takasaki. After the premiere, many international film critics praised the clarity and depth of the new picture.

Perfect Days is set in Tokyo and tells the story of a man named Hirayama (played by Japanese actor Koji Yakusho) who, being a toilet cleaner, is very content with his life.

Wenders created a film of “deceptive simplicity”. “Watching the smallest details of everyday existence with such clarity, fortitude and empathy that they create a cumulative emotional power, even if you don’t notice it,” said the American magazine Hollywood Reporter about the new work of Wim Wenders.

Angels disappeared forever in the sky over Berlin

According to the German news agency dpa, Wim Wenders was asked at a press conference if he was thinking about a sequel to his cult film Der Himmel über Berlin. In this 1987 drama, two angels were played by Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander. Both of them have already died: Otto Sander in 2013, Bruno Ganz in 2019.

“My angels have disappeared forever in the skies over Berlin,” Wenders replied sadly. “I’m not sure I’ll go back to the idea of angels. Anyway, my new film is pretty close to that theme. If you want, Hirayama is an angel. Not many see him in this role. He is invisible to many people.”
