When Rakshabandhan or any other festival comes, the fear of fake products starts haunting. Fraudsters start adulterating milk, ghee and cheese to increase their supply. Many people even use dangerous urea, chemicals or synthetic colours in it. You will be surprised to know that these chemicals are so dangerous that they can cause allergies and even cancer.

How to avoid buying fake products? During festivals, adulterated milk, desi ghee, khoya etc. are sold the most. There are two ways to avoid this. First is to buy the goods from a trusted and well-known shop. Second is to bring it home and check its purity yourself.

Identification of adulterated milk and desi ghee

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India takes care of the quality of food items in India. FSSAI has explained the method of checking adulteration and purity in every food. You can easily do these tests at home.

  • The drop of pure milk will slowly come down leaving a milky line behind.
  • Whereas the milk mixed with water will slide down quickly and will not leave any line.

  • Take 5 to 10 ml milk and the same amount of water.
  • Mix both and shake well.
  • Heavy foam will start forming in milk containing detergent whereas nothing like this will be seen in pure milk.

Identification of adulterated khoya, chhena and paneer

  • Take 2-3 ml of the product you want to test and boil it with 5 ml water.
  • After cooling, add 2-3 drops of iodine tincture to the mixture.
  • If starch is adulterated in it then its colour will become blue.

How to identify fake Desi Ghee

  • Add half a teaspoon of Desi Ghee in a transparent bowl.
  • Add 2-3 drops of iodine tincture in it.
  • The colour of Desi Ghee adulterated with starch will turn blue.
  • Consuming such ghee will cause more harm than benefits.

Test for dangerous urea in milk

  • Take 5 ml milk sample in a transparent bowl.
  • Now add half a teaspoon of soybean or arhar dal powder and shake it well.
  • Wait for 5 minutes and put red litmus paper in it and wait for half a minute.
  • Remove the paper and see, the paper mixed with milk containing urea will turn blue.
