From this Tuesday it is possible to request the vote by mail for the regional and municipal elections that will be held next month. On the last Sunday of May, the 28th, municipal elections take place throughout the country, as well as regional elections in all the autonomous communities except Andalusia, Catalonia, Galicia, the Basque Country and Castilla y León. If you are not going to be able to go to the voting center to deposit your ballot, you can resort to voting by mail.
This process is intended for voters residing in Spain and voters residing abroad who are temporarily in Spain. It must be borne in mind that once the Electoral Census Office accepts the vote-by-mail application, it will not be possible to vote at the polling station on election day itself.
What is the deadline to request a vote by mail?
The term is from now until May 18, inclusive, to request the Certificate of registration in the corresponding Electoral Census.
What is needed to order it?
Voters who decide to vote by mail will have to obtain their registration certificate as an essential requirement to be able to vote by correspondence, and this can be requested electronically -through the web www.correos.es–, or in person at any Post Office in Spain.
If you opt for a telematic application model, which avoids travel, the interested party must have an electronic ID – which must be inserted into a card reader – or a valid digital certificate, which must be installed on the computer. It does not work with having the Clave system installed. The steps to follow in this case are specified on the Correos website.
If, on the other hand, the request is made at a Spanish Post Office, it must be made personally by each voter, except in the case of illness or disability -accredited by official medical certification- that prevents a person from making the request in person. In this case, the request can be presented on behalf of the voter by another person authorized by a notary or consular authority.
At the time of making the request, those interested must prove their identity by presenting the original DNI, passport or driver’s license to the post office employee. In order to expedite procedures and avoid waiting, Correos offers the option of making an appointment to request a vote in offices, through the app, the Correos website or the Virtual Office.
What is the deadline to deliver the ballot?
To complete the process, you must go in person to a Post Office. Although to request the vote you can do it either online or physically, to deposit it you must go to a Post Office. What if I live abroad and I’m not going to travel to Spain?
The elections on May 28 will be the first after the repeal of the requested vote. In this way, voters residing abroad will automatically receive the necessary documentation to vote at the address where they are registered and -if they choose to vote in person- they will be able to deposit their vote in the ballot box between the eighth and third day before the elections in the dependencies enabled for it (Embassies, Offices or Consular Sections).
