How to easily put the car chains when there is snow

by time news

Christmas past, the winter of 2022-2023 It has been a long time coming, but in the coming days the drop in temperatures will cause snow to be present in many parts of our geography. According to the State Meteorological Agency, during this week it is very likely that we will find it in a large part of Spain, both in ski resorts and on roads and highways.

Given this situation and with the arrival of winter, it never hurts to wear chains. But just as important as wearing them is knowing how to place them. Experts, however, recommend practicing before hitting the road, and always wearing a pair of gloves to make the task easier.

Although year after year the DGT recommends, with the arrival of cold, rain, frost and snow, equipping the car with winter tires or chains, the reality is that around 60% of drivers do not know how to correctly fit these accessories.

First of all, avoid placing the snow chains in an inappropriate place, that is, you have to choose a safe place and away from traffic since placing them requires time to do well. On the one hand, circulation cannot be obstructed and, on the other, security is compromised. Of course, you have to indicate the situation with the emergency triangles or the V-16 sign and put on a reflective vest if you do it on the shoulder, something that is not advisable.

You have to know which one is suitable for your tire. There are several types: of steel links, which guarantee good traction in snow, are durable and resistant, and the textile, composite and spider type, which also have good performance and are even easier to assemble. It must also be clear that they have to be placed “always when we meet the snow”, never before.

First it is passed behind the tire, and when it is well unfolded, the ends of the inner ring are lifted and tied at the top of the tire. Then you have to go centering it in front, close it, tighten it to the maximum and tie the excess rope.

If you have opted for manual tension chains, it is recommended that you drive 100 meters to adjust them later. It is necessary to check frequently that the chains are well assembled and fastened, that no hitch has come loose.

with snow chains speed should be reduced and yet not all drivers know it or put it into practice. With snow chains you cannot exceed 50 km/h. In any case, it is very important to reduce speed until you drive safely, adapting it to the circumstances of the road and weather conditions, always following the indications of the signs and, above all, of the information panels and traffic agents. You also have to avoid sudden acceleration and braking.

Not to follow manufacturer’s instructions for the correct placement of the chains is a very common mistake. Follow the indicated guidelines to avoid complications and that the chains are well placed or fastened.
