Until the cost of intelligence drops significantly or the value provided to the end-user increases proportionally, the economics remain strained.

The tension between investment and return is not just a theoretical concern. Currently, the revenue generated by generative AI services is a small fraction of that figure.

Most current AI adoption falls into the category of “productivity gains.” Companies are using AI to write emails faster or summarize documents—tasks that save time but do not necessarily create new products or open new markets. For the AI bubble to avoid a catastrophic pop, the industry must move from “efficiency tools” to “transformative products” that customers are willing to pay a premium for.

This shift likely requires a move toward “Agentic AI”—systems that do not just chat, but can independently execute complex workflows, such as managing a supply chain or conducting full-scale market research without constant human prompting. This represents the next logical step in the technology’s evolution, but it also requires a level of reliability and reasoning that current models still struggle to achieve consistently.

Echoes of the Dot-Com Era

To understand where we are, it is helpful to glance at the 1999 market crash. The dot-com bubble was not based on a lie; the internet was indeed a transformative technology. However, the market priced in the success of the internet decades before the infrastructure—broadband, secure payments, and logistics—was ready to support it. For the average user and developer, the focus is shifting toward practical utility. The era of being impressed by a poem written by a bot is over; the era of requiring a bot to accurately manage a database or automate a legal audit has begun. The survival of the current AI investment wave depends entirely on whether the software can catch up to the hardware.

The next critical checkpoint for the industry will be the upcoming quarterly earnings reports from the major cloud providers, where investors will be looking for concrete evidence that AI services are contributing significantly to top-line growth, rather than just increasing operational costs. Until then, the industry remains in a high-stakes race between innovation, and exhaustion.
