Many times it happens that an elderly lady of the house slips in the bathroom and suffers a major fracture. The family members do not understand how such a minor injury can result in a fracture. The reason for this is low bone density. After menopause, women’s bones weaken quickly and they get osteoporosis at a younger age than men.

How to detect osteoporosis?

After menopause, if a woman feels unnecessarily tired and has joint pain, then these can be signs of osteoporosis. Women should be aware that they may suffer from osteoporosis after menopause, so they should be alert to these signs.

The biggest drawback of most Indian women is that they do not exercise. They think that by doing household chores they get exercise, but it is not so. To stay fit-healthy and strengthen bones, women should also do regular exercise.

When do women get osteoporosis?

Women should take care of bone health after pregnancy and delivery. A woman needs more calcium during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the child gets all the calcium from the mother’s bones, hence the mother’s body needs more calcium. After delivery, when the mother feeds milk to the child, the woman’s body needs more calcium.

Many women take calcium during pregnancy, but become careless after the birth of the child. In such a situation, the body absorbs calcium from the mother’s bones and prepares milk for the baby. Therefore, at this time, a woman needs calcium and Vitamin D a lot.

How to take care of health after menopause?

Women should start paying attention to their health even before menopause begins. For this, diet and exercise are most important. Include dry fruits, milk, curd, egg, sprouted grains etc. in your diet. Do exercise daily.

If there is severe deficiency of calcium and vitamin D in the body, then their supplements can be taken after consulting the doctor. Most women are advised to take calcium and vitamin D supplements during menopause.

If a woman’s mother has had early menopause, then this can happen to her too. Such women should pay more attention to their health. If necessary, calcium and vitamin D supplements should be started immediately after consulting a doctor.

Detect Osteoporosis with DEXA Scan

DEXA scan is done to check the strength and density of bones. This shows what the level of bone density is. This makes treatment easier. BMD test is also done to find out the level of osteoporosis, but DEXA Scan is more beneficial in comparison to this.

This helps in knowing how severe osteoporosis is and makes it easier to treat. After the age of 50, 30 to 50% of women have osteoporosis. Therefore women should take care of their bone health.
