Is there also a strained turning point on the financial markets caused by the war in Ukraine? More and more experts come to this view. Gone are the days when global economic growth was decent, inflation was low and money was cheap. The good times are called Goldilocks Scenario, based on a 19th century English story. Until the beginning of the war, this brought high returns on stocks, strong profits from real estate and rising bond prices on the stock exchanges. The teetotallers of the capital market lost out on interest-free accounts.
In the early summer of 2023, however, Goldilocks will be farther away than they have been for a long time. This was underlined on Tuesday by the round of capital market experts at the Federal Association of Public Banks (VÖB) in the Helaba high-rise in Frankfurt. All six banks represented expect the economy in Germany to shrink by between 0.1 and 0.6 percent this year. But hardly any growth is expected in the important export markets of Europe and the USA either.
