Square brackets are indispensable in many areas – whether in programming, in Excel or when writing texts in Word. However, these characters are not directly visible on the keyboard, which sometimes presents users with challenges. We’ll tell you how to easily insert the brackets using a keyboard shortcut.
On a Windows keyboard, square brackets can be inserted by using the “Alt” or “Alt Gr” key, which is located to the right of the space bar. You combine this with the number keys “8” and “9”.
These keyboard shortcuts work in both Word and Excel.
On the Mac, typing square brackets works a little differently than on Windows. Here you need the “option” key, which is located at the bottom left between “control” and “command”. For the square brackets you also use the “5” and “6” keys.
If you have a keyboard connected to your Mac that does not have the “option” key, press the “Alt” key in combination with “5” and “6” instead.
