OUR ADVICES – Most often linked to hearing loss, tinnitus affects one in ten people. If it is not possible to silence these annoying noises, solutions exist to attenuate them.

Living with a continuous hiss that exists only in your head is the daily life of people with tinnitus. Following a discussion in a noisy environment, falling asleep or working can become hellish, which promotes anxiety and depression. The problem is far from negligible: about 10% of adults are affected, including 1% by a disabling form, according to the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm). If there is no miracle treatment to make your tinnitus completely disappear, there are effective ways to reduce it and return to an (almost) normal life.

First of all, it is better to find the cause. “Having tinnitus can be an expression of a more serious problem, so do not hesitate to consult a doctor», explains Jean-Luc Puel, director of the Institute of Neurosciences at Inserm in Montpellier. In 5% of cases, they are due to a vascular, inflammatory, metabolic or neurological problem. Addressing the cause most often makes the tinnitus disappear.
