Anyone who maintains a long contact list on their smartphone needs a lot of patience as soon as they search for a person whose name they can no longer remember. So it’s worth tidying up your own phone book every now and then.
However, if you want to delete an old contact from Signal Messenger, you will notice on the first try that it doesn’t work that easily. Find out why this is the case and what you can do instead here.
Here’s how to delete a contact to make them disappear from Signal too
Similar to WhatsApp, the Signal messenger does not have its own contact list. Instead, the application synchronizes the displayed conversation partners with your smartphone’s phone book. As a result, the only way to delete a contact from Signal is to remove it from your cell phone’s contact list.
Exactly how this works can vary slightly due to the large number of different devices and software variants. On both the iPhone and many common Android smartphones, you usually delete a phone book entry using a pre-installed contacts app.
Tap on the contact entry you want to remove and then look for a “Delete” or “Delete contact” option. This function is often hidden in a menu or behind an “Edit” button.
Blocked people also disappear from the Signal contact list
If you only want to delete an old contact from the Signal contact list but not from your smartphone’s phone book, you can alternatively block it within Messenger.
However, please note that as a result, the other person will no longer be able to send you messages via Signal Messenger. The content shared by the blocked participant within a chat group will then also be invisible to you.
If you still want to block the person, follow these four steps:
- In the Signal app, open the chat with the contact you want to delete from the Messenger contact list.
- Tap the name at the top to access the contact information.
- Scroll down and select “Block” or “Block this user” depending on your device.
- Finally confirm with “Block”.
After you complete these steps, the blocked person will no longer appear in your Signal contact list. To reverse the process, navigate to “Privacy > Blocked” in the messenger’s settings. From there, tap on the name of the respective user to unblock them again.
