Frankfurt The search for savings is what drives many people these days. Inflation is falling, but food, of all things, is still a whopping eleven percent more expensive than a year ago. Some also consider church tax as a potential savings.

A recent YouGov survey commissioned by the dpa news agency showed that the amount of the tax was the second most important reason for leaving the church: 43 percent of those surveyed stated that the church tax could persuade them to leave. Only the abuse scandal was mentioned more frequently (49 percent).

In 2022 alone, more than half a million people left the Catholic Church, and around 380,000 left the Protestant Church. However, the financial burden of church tax is often overestimated, because part of the tax is refunded via the income tax return. And with high incomes, the tax burden can be reduced without leaving the church.
