True or false? This question cannot always be answered clearly on social networks. Image: Plainpicture

Younger people in particular are often confronted with fake news about the Middle East conflict on platforms like Tiktok. Which are they? How do you recognize them? And how can parents talk to their children about this?

Why is there so much fake news about the Middle East conflict?

Fake news is not a new phenomenon. Regarding the corona pandemic, for example, there was and still is a lot of misinformation and conspiracy theories online. However, researchers describe the scale and speed of the spread of fake news about Hamas’ attacks on Israel as unprecedented. Social networks are full of posts intended to support either the Palestinians’ view or Israel’s goals.

The extent of misinformation is so great that the European Commission has already warned X, formerly Twitter, Tiktok and Facebook parent company Meta for false information in connection with the Middle East conflict. The platforms are not doing enough to combat the spread of fake news. In addition, the work of traditional media such as television or newspapers is becoming more difficult because it is becoming increasingly dangerous in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli and Egyptian governments are also refusing entry to the Gaza Strip. This makes it harder for the media to obtain reliable information.
