Architects have long since proven that anything can be built with wood as a climate protection material – skyscrapers, airports, concert halls, villas and factories. But the challenges are great.
Lcan you save the world with wood? Hans Joachim Schellnhuber believes in it. “We can build ourselves out of the climate crisis with wood,” is the credo of the climate researcher, who thinks in global contexts. His approach: wood binds carbon dioxide, about one ton per cubic meter. If you use it as a building material instead of concrete and steel, the production of which releases huge amounts of the climate-damaging gas, you help the climate twice over.
So far, so well known. A few years ago, Schellnhuber came up with the idea that you have to provide the whole thing with a “narrative” in order to create a convincing advertising message. Voilà: If the world’s construction industry is largely switched to wood, then you will set in motion a forest-construction pump that will lead to the decarbonization of the atmosphere. In order to create the conditions for wooden buildings everywhere, Schellnhuber has to turn a very big wheel.
