A comprehensive study published in the medical journal The Lancet has revealed the high prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in men worldwide. The study, which analyzed data from 65 studies involving 44,769 men across 35 countries, found that almost every third man is infected with at least one genital HPV type, and around every fifth man carries one or more HPV types.

While HPV is known to affect both men and women, the study underscores the importance of including men in comprehensive HPV prevention strategies. Men often go unnoticed as carriers of the virus and can unknowingly infect their sexual partners. HPV infection in men can lead to serious consequences such as penile cancer, anal cancer, or head and neck tumors.

Furthermore, HPV is a leading cause of cervical cancer in women. Of the more than 200 types of HPV, at least 12 are oncogenic and can cause cancer. Therefore, vaccination is seen as the best protection against HPV infection and the possible development of cervical cancer.

The study also highlighted the highest incidence of HPV in young adults, peaking between the ages of 25 and 29, before declining slightly. Regions such as Europe, North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, and Southern Africa were found to have high HPV infection rates in men. However, East and Southeast Asia showed lower rates of HPV infections in men.

The authors of the study emphasized the need to include men in HPV prevention strategies to reduce HPV-related morbidity and mortality in both men and women. Their findings underscored the importance of early vaccination among boys and girls aged nine to 14 years to reduce the risk of HPV-related cancers, including cervical and anal cancers.

While the study provides valuable insights into the prevalence of HPV infection in men, it is important to note that this article only offers general information and is not intended for self-diagnosis, treatment, or medication. Individuals are advised to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and information.]
