Football legend Hristo Stoichkov and Levski coach Julio Velasquez met for a 30-minute conversation in Ravno Pole ahead of the 25th Footballer of the Footballers ceremony, where Velasquez collected his award as the top manager in the domestic league.
A Thirty-Minute Spanish Conversation in Ravno Pole
The unexpected summit brought together two distinctly different eras and backgrounds in European football. Hristo Stoichkov, whose storied career reached its pinnacle in 1994 when he won the Ballon d’Or, crossed paths with Julio Velasquez just before the silver anniversary of the awards gala. The pair conversed in Spanish for approximately half an hour, drawing considerable attention as they bridged generations of football experience.
While Stoichkov remains the most globally recognized name in Bulgarian football history, Velasquez represents the Spanish tactical school, having built his coaching resume across multiple international leagues before taking the helm at Levski. Their lengthy exchange served as a high-profile prelude to an evening dedicated to peer-voted recognition.
Top Honors for Velasquez and Chochev
The informal gathering preceded a milestone night for domestic football. Velasquez entered the venue as the newly minted manager of the year in the top-tier efbet League, an accolade earned following a comprehensive voting process involving all team captains and professional club managers across Bulgaria.
Player recognition for the 2025–2026 campaign went to Ludogorets midfielder Ivaylo Chochev, who secured the coveted best player honors. The awards ceremony traditionally highlights those whose performances earn the direct respect of their on-field adversaries.
The Significance of Peer Recognition
Unlike media-voted accolades or board selections, the Footballer of the Footballers gala carries a unique weight within the sport because the validation comes entirely from active professionals. That specific dynamic drew two figures with vastly different vantage points—one a legendary icon of the pitch, the other a current tactical leader on the touchline—into a deep, animated dialogue about the game they share.
