Huawei is launching two new smartwatches – one model could compete with the Apple Watch. We’ll reveal in the test whether it’s worth buying.

Everything is smart these days – our cell phones, our televisions and even our watches. These can send us the messages from our cell phone, count every single one of our steps, measure our pulse and sleep rhythm and encourage us to move more. In short: They should help us optimize our lives.

Anyone who wants to buy a smartwatch is often spoiled for choice. Manufacturers are bringing more and more models onto the market. So does Huawei. The Chinese company has released two new smart watches: the Huawei Watch Fit 3 and the Huawei Watch 4 Pro in the Space Edition. t-online tested both. Is it worth buying?

Watch Fit 3’s design is reminiscent of the Apple Watch

In terms of design, the two watches are very different. The Huawei Watch Fit 3 is strongly reminiscent of the Apple Watch and impresses with its simple and timeless design. It doesn’t look bulky on the wrist. The soft bracelet made of fluoroelastomer, a synthetic rubber, is also comfortable to wear. The look of the “dial” can be customized – from a reduced to a playful design. In general, the display appears tidy and clear.

The Watch 4 Pro looks more like a classic wristwatch with a round case and a link bracelet made of titanium. In keeping with the space theme of the Smart Watch, the casing is made of coated titanium, which is said to be particularly durable yet lightweight.

However, the weight is one of the biggest drawbacks of the watch. Even without the bracelet, it weighs 65 grams – a weight that can be felt on the wrist. The Huawei Watch Fit 3, on the other hand, weighs only 26 grams.

The straps of both watches can be exchanged, but with the Watch Fit 3 the choice of straps is much larger – in addition to the standard version made of fluoroelastomer, there is a nylon and a leather strap. Both watches are operated via a touchscreen and two buttons, one of which is a rotating crown.

Very long battery life is a big plus

The installation and pairing process works relatively smoothly after creating an account with Huawei. Synchronizing with services installed on the smartphone – such as the Health app on the iPhone – is also easy.

However, there is also a Huawei Health app that you have to install during installation anyway. It provides an even more detailed overview of the data the watch has recorded.

The owner can also use the application to update the smartwatch. But he should take a lot of time for this. In our test, an update took several hours. What happens relatively quickly is charging the watch. Although the manufacturer itself states a charging time of one hour, in the test it was back to 100 percent a little quicker.

And the battery not only charges quickly – it also lasts a long time, at least with the Watch Fit 3. Huawei claims that it lasts seven to a maximum of ten days with normal use, which was confirmed in our test. According to the manufacturer, the battery life of the Huawei Watch 4 Pro should be around four and a half days under normal use. The watch also has an “ultra-long” mode in which the battery should last a full 21 days under certain (system) conditions.

Which smartwatch is right for me?

The functions of the smart watches correspond to the usual standard. For example, you can measure your pulse, track your sleep rhythm and track sporting activities. The Watch 4 Pro has a few additional functions: irregular pulse analysis, sleep apnea detection and risk assessment for elevated blood sugar.
