The personal collection of French couturier Hubert de Givenchy, who died in 2018, was sold at auction for more than 114 million euros in Paris, twice more than its low estimate, announced Monday June 20 Christie’s, which organized this dispersion.

About 800 “flagship” lots, paintings or sculptures by old, modern or contemporary masters or exceptional Regency furniture from the 18th century, were offered at four physical auctions from June 14 to 17. Two online sales of 478 smaller lots will end on Thursday.

The works, collected throughout his life by Hubert de Givenchy, come from two of his residences, the Hôtel d’Orrouer in Paris and the Château du Jonchet in the Loire Valley.

Physical auctions total 114.4 million euros, more than double the low estimate (50 million) and 19 new world records for antique furniture by David Roentgen, Domenico Piola and Piero Dorazio, said Christie’s in a communicated.

The Walking Woman by Alberto Giacometti, which was the flagship lot, was sold for 27 million euros. It is the most expensive work sold at auction in France since the beginning of the year. This is a record for a work from the artist’s surrealist period.

Twenty lots from the Givenchy collection were sold above one million euros and five above five million (Joan Mirò, Pablo Picasso, a pair of girandoles attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire).

Buyers from all over the world participated in this auction, including 57% from Europe and the Middle East, 30% from the American continent, and 12% from Asia.
