BOLZANO. A huge rockfall occurred yesterday evening (July 29th) on Cima Dodici, on the Sexten Dolomitesfortunately without causing injuries or casualties.

At around 9pm a large shower of rocks hit the area near Giralba fork, at 2,300 metres above sea level, along the scree. The event was observed from the nearby Comici-Zsigmondy refuge.

Given the time, fortunately there were no more hikers on the trail, otherwise the outcome could have been very different. The trail is currently closed. At this moment experts from the Province of Bolzano are flying over the area with a helicopter to assess the situation.

In recent years, several landslides have occurred in the Sesto Dolomites. On 3 August 2022, there was a large rock fall in the Weisslahn area in val Fiscalina. On August 8, 2015, five hikers were injured but not seriously by a rockfall after a heavy storm. In September 2008, there were two rockfalls on the Fork Eleven and on the Three Shoemakers Peak.

The most sensational event was the mega landslide of 60,000 cubic meters on October 12, 2007, with a thick cloud of dust that settled for hours on the Fiscalina Valley. “It looked like a scene like the Twin Towers in New York,” said a witness at the time.
