Portuguese Hugo Viana of Sporting Lisbon will replace Txiki Begiristain as Manchester City’s sporting director next season, the English champions club announced on Saturday. “After twelve trophy-filled years at the Etihad Stadium, Txiki will leave his current position following this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup and will be replaced by Sporting CP’s Hugo Viana.”the city said in a statement.
“Viana will assume her role full-time in summer 2025, but will work with Txiki in the months leading up to it to ensure a smooth transition”adds the club. Begiristain joined City in 2012 after holding the same role at Barcelona between 2003 and 2010. He has been widely credited with convincing his former Barcelona teammate Guardiola to become manager of the club Premier League in 2016.
The Spaniard had offered Guardiola his first managerial job at Barcelona, the two men were linked by a friendship that dates back to their playing careers, when they both wore the colors of the Catalan club in the 1990s it was Guardiola-Begiristain. City have enjoyed a golden era, with six Premier League titles, including the last four in a row, and the club’s first Champions League, as well as a host of other trophies. Begiristain’s imminent departure will bring back into the news questions about the future of Guardiola, whose contract expires at the end of the season. The 53-year-old manager has yet to agree to extend his contract after hinting last season that he could be nearing the end of his time in England.
