“Many K-League clubs will receive overseas training on January 8 next year, the day of the Football Association President election.”
“It is difficult to exercise legitimate voting rights… “It will be difficult to receive recognition as the legitimacy of the election.”
Former national team coach Huh Jung-moo, who announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Korea Football Association, raised concerns about unfair elections and argued for the introduction of online or early voting methods.
Former national team coach Heo Jeong-moo said in a press release on the 24th, “The biggest problem ahead of the soccer association president election is that it may be difficult for players and leaders with voting rights to exercise their right to vote due to the training schedule.”
He added, “We demand the introduction of online voting or early voting in which players and coaches can participate.”
The 55th Korean Football Association President election will be held on January 8, 2025.
There are a total of 194 electoral votes, of which 43 are assigned to many of the coaches and players of K-League clubs and are scheduled to go on overseas training trips on the day of the election for the president of the Football Association.
According to the Korea Professional Football League, 20 of the 25 teams in K League 1 and 2 will conduct training overseas, 2 teams will conduct training in Jeju, and 1 team will conduct training in Namhae.
Former director Heo said, “If their right to vote is not properly guaranteed and only some of them vote, it will be difficult for the legitimacy of their election to be recognized.”
In reality, the Electoral College does not necessarily have to vote. If you stay overseas and cannot vote, you will be processed as an abstention.
This is the background for former coach Heo, who is a former soccer player and has to appeal to K-League clubs and players, to call out unfair elections.
Former director Heo is advocating online voting and early voting as alternatives.
Online voting is also permitted in Article 25, Paragraph 4 of the Presidential Election Management Regulations (Election Method).
The regulations state, ‘Voting and counting (hereinafter referred to as “electronic voting and counting”) may be conducted using electronic methods such as the National Election Commission’s online voting system,’ and ‘When electronic voting and counting are conducted, electronic voting and counting may be carried out. It is clearly stated that “related matters will be decided in consultation with the National Election Commission, etc.”
An official close to former director Heo said, “We checked with the National Election Commission and found that if you apply at least 10 days before the election date, you can receive online voting support, so you can vote overseas.”
He then emphasized, “It is a system that allows voting and counting of about 200 people without any problems.”
Advance voting is also possible through agreement between candidates.
Former Director Heo said, “It is entirely possible to introduce early voting if the candidates have the will.”
