Human Development Index; India Down Again – Chandrika Daily

New Delhi: India has slipped one more place from the previous year to rank 132 in the Human Development Index 2021 published by the United Nations Development Programme. Last time India was ranked 131 out of 191 countries. The list measures the life expectancy, standard of living and education level of the people of the country.

India’s Human Development Index (HDI) decreased from 0.642 in 2020 to 0.633 in 2021. Till 2019, India’s Human Development Index has improved every year. Switzerland, Norway and Iceland are the countries leading in the human index. India belongs to the category of 43 countries with medium human development. Most of these are Asian and African countries. India’s neighbors Sri Lanka are at 73rd, China at 79th, Bangladesh at 129th and Bhutan at 127th. Pakistan ranks 161st, Nepal 143rd and Myanmar 149th. South Sudan, Chad and Niger are the three African countries at the bottom of the list.
