Human Rights Council: the strong, responsible and measured involvement of the Moroccan presidency has already achieved significant results (Mr. Zniber)

“The Moroccan presidency of the CDH is carrying out intense activities at the head of this UN body. It intelligently contributes to strengthening ties and building bridges between States on various thematic issues that impact the work of the Council,” Mr. Zniber stressed in a statement to MAP on the sidelines of a press conference to present the 57th session of the Council, which opens next Monday in Geneva.

In this regard, he noted, the Moroccan presidency always seeks, in neutrality and impartiality, to ensure that the Council continues its mission of promoting and protecting human rights, in accordance with its mandate.

In relation to the priorities of the Moroccan presidency, it has organized very high-level presidential discussions. The last one, held on Tuesday, focused on the theme of new technologies and artificial intelligence and their impact on the enjoyment of human rights. Another high-level event was held previously on the issue of climate change, food security and health security.

These events saw an unprecedented level of participation, with the Moroccan presidency inviting the main leaders of international organizations concerned by these issues to launch debates and issue a series of proposals and recommendations which were shared with the ongoing process in New York relating to the preparation of the “Summit of the Future”.

This “strong, responsible and, at the same time, measured involvement of the Moroccan presidency is going in the right direction and has already achieved significant results,” welcomed the Moroccan ambassador, noting that there remains the organization of the 57th session of the Council, which will be held from September 9 to October 11 in Geneva, as well as the presentation of the report to the UN General Assembly and many other activities.

Mr. Zniber also mentioned one of the flagship projects of his presidency of the Human Rights Council, that of the establishment of an “Advisory Council” on the integration of the gender approach in the work of the Council and in the entire spectrum of international organizations in Geneva.

With a very significant representation, with leaders of international organizations, as well as representatives of States, intergovernmental agencies and civil society, this body will aim to develop best practices in order to ensure that the gender approach becomes a strong and complete reality in terms of equity in the exercise of responsibilities and parity in terms of treatment of staff working in international organizations. The idea is that international organizations are a worthy model for States in this matter.

Furthermore, Mr. Zniber stressed that the Moroccan presidency always ensures, whatever the nature of the activity, to highlight the tireless efforts of Morocco, under the personal leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, on all issues of interest to the CDH, in particular those of social and economic development, but also issues of peace, tolerance and acceptance of others.

The Moroccan presidency of the CDH, he added, also invited a number of senior Moroccan officials and experts who came to share during the debates in Geneva the vision of Morocco and the experiences accumulated by the Kingdom in the promotion of human rights.

Presenting the 57th session of the Human Rights Council to the accredited press at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Mr. Zniber reported an extremely busy agenda. On the menu, no fewer than 32 draft resolutions announced for this 57th session. “It’s heavy for everyone!”, he declared, also mentioning the examination of the country situation and the appointment of new mandate holders.

During the five-week session, the Council will consider more than 80 reports submitted by the United Nations Secretariat and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, human rights experts and other fact-finding bodies on a wide range of topics and relevant to the human rights situation in nearly 50 countries. In total, the Council will hold 20 interactive debates with special procedures mandate holders.

The President of the Human Rights Council assured that he will ensure that the debates of this 57th session take place in the best possible way, giving more opportunities and more visibility to small island States.

He also assured that the Moroccan presidency also ensures that the Council functions as well as possible, despite the financial crisis that the United Nations is going through, which has an impact on the work of the Council.
