Human rights organization calls for responding to those affected in Kufra

by times news cr

A human rights organization urged government agencies to “accelerate steps and efforts and take effective measures to intervene and provide urgent assistance to those affected by the floods and torrents that hit the city of Kufra on Sunday, and to provide urgent protection and care to the residents, and to direct all ministries and relevant bodies to harness the necessary capabilities and equipment to overcome this disaster, and to work to provide all food and medical needs for citizens, with the aim of alleviating the severity of the humanitarian crisis experienced by the residents there, and to work to limit the damage resulting from these torrents that submerged the city of Kufra.”

The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya said in a statement that “Libyan citizens, residents of marginalized areas in southern Libya, must receive emergency services on the ground in a way that enhances their sense of citizenship, and not be satisfied with remote follow-up from government offices in Tripoli, which does not express the government’s sense of legal, national and humanitarian responsibility towards its citizens,” holding the Government of National Unity responsible for its neglect of some Libyan cities and its lack of concern for the infrastructure, especially the cities of southern Libya.

The Foundation called on the Government of National Unity to “move quickly and respond urgently to confront these climatic conditions that may endanger the safety of the residents of the cities of Kufra and Tazerbo, and threaten their homes with water erosion,” stressing “the importance of the government fulfilling its legal and national duties and responsibilities towards the citizens in the affected areas by providing all the necessary equipment to deal with natural disasters to ensure the safety of the population, and to prevent any casualties or material damage to public and private property, as much as possible.”

The statement called on “civil society institutions, humanitarian and charitable organizations and associations to intensify their efforts in these difficult exceptional circumstances to support those affected and provide them with a helping hand in this humanitarian ordeal they are going through.”
