22 international human rights and relief organizations issued a statement calling on the Maltese authorities to stop forcibly returning illegal immigrants to Libya, considering this measure to be in violation of international humanitarian law.
These organizations warned in a joint statement that migrants who return to Libya may be exposed to risks in detention places, some of which are run by armed groups, expressing their “deep concern” about reports indicating that the Maltese authorities allowed the Libyan Coast Guard to enter the search and rescue area. For Malta to return irregular migrants to Libya.
The “Times of Malta” newspaper quoted the organizations in their human rights statement as saying that “Libya is not a safe country for migrants, due to security unrest and government division, which makes the conditions of illegal immigrants there harsh,” adding that the “miserable” situation of migrants and asylum seekers residing inside Libya has been documented. Well received by UN observers and experts.
The organizations called for an investigation into the news of the forced return of 83 migrants to Libya, in an incident recorded by the “Alert Phone” network last week.
Among the organizations that signed the statement: “Aditius, Justice, Equality and Peace League, Blue Door Education, Critical Institute, Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation, Humanist Association of Malta, Paulo Freire Institute Foundation, Victim Support Malta, Women’s Rights Foundation.”
