The phenomenon Niño, also known as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), is a climate phenomenon that primarily impacts the tropical Pacific region. However, its influence extends to the Esmeraldas coast, generating a series of complications for its inhabitants.

During the occurrence of El Niño, the waters of the central and eastern Pacific experience unusual warming, which triggers global climate changes. In Esmeraldas, these changes translate into an increase in precipitation and temperatures.

Impact on agriculture and livestock
These climate changes significantly affect agriculture, livestock and fishing in the region. Heavy rains can cause flooding of crop fields, affecting food production. Additionally, stronger storms and intense winds can cause significant damage to local infrastructure. It is important to mention that the phenomenon Niño is not a constant event, but rather occurs with certain periodicity and can vary in intensity. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of the forecasts and alerts issued by local authorities to take the necessary precautions.

Intense Winter in Esmeraldas

An intense winter is forecast along the entire coast of Ecuador, and Esmeraldas is no exception. Although so far the rains have not been very heavy, in recent days there has been rainfall that has caused slight damage to several homes in places such as Garazo in the Esmeraldas canton, as well as in Muisne and Quinindé. Rains that began on February 1 have increased the flow of the Esmeraldas River, causing problems for residents living near the river’s banks.

In total, 400 people attended, according to the publication of the Risk Secretariat.

In the Vuelta Larga parish, in the Esmeraldas canton, care was also provided to those affected. Assistance reached the El Gatazo sector, where more than 163 families, or 735 people, were assisted. Soldiers of the Armed Forces are also coordinating with officials from the National Secretariat for Risk Management and the Ecuadorian Red Cross in Esmeraldas to provide aid to the victims, such as food kits, supplies and mattresses.
