New Germany coach, Julian Nagelsmann has revealed his first list for the friendly matches in October.

Julian Nagelsmann recalled Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels (34) for his first list as Germany coach unveiled on Friday, and the friendlies in the United States in mid-October against the United States and Mexico.

After the humiliation against Japan (4-1) on September 9, Germany parted ways with its coach Hansi Flick. The Federation’s sporting director Rudi Völler successfully took over as interim coach against France (2-1), before Julian Nagelsmann was appointed coach on September 22.

The former Bayern coach will sit on the Germany bench for his first friendly matches on October 14 in Hartford (Connecticut) against the United States and on October 17 in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) against Mexico, eight months away of Euro 2024.

For his first list in his new costume, Nagelsmann therefore decided to call on Mats Hummels, whose last selection in the Nationalmannschaft jersey dates back to June 29, 2021, a round of 16 of Euro-2021 lost against England (2-0), Joachim Löw’s last match as coach.

Returning to Borussia Dortmund’s central defense at the start of the season after a less successful period, Hummels was never called up by Flick for selection.

“I stand back from this question. It’s been so long since I was there that I don’t have the right overview”Hummels commented, after a BVB match in mid-September, about the search for a new coach.

«Mats is a player with great experience, and that’s also what we want to see. He is excellent in constructing the game, he has the courage to play the balls in midfield. He sometimes takes risks and we will need him against teams who defend low. Through his experience, he is also good at coaching, he has a good tactical understanding”explained Nagelsmann in a video published on the DFB website.

Thomas Muller present

Absent by mutual agreement with Flick for the international windows of March and June, Thomas Müller was not on the initial list for September but returned during the rally to compensate for the injury to Niclas Füllkrug and scored against France.

The Bayern striker has not been started for several matches by Thomas Tuchel, but retains an important role in the Bavarian squad. Tuesday evening in the Champions League, he ideally served the young French striker Mathys Tel (18 years old), for the winning goal in Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Three novices with the team are part of Nagelsmann’s list: midfielders Robert Andrich and Chris Führich, and forward Kevin Behrens.

After the elimination in Qatar, Germany had a string of more than disappointing results, with setbacks against Belgium (3-2, the first since 1954), Poland (1-0), Colombia (2-0) and Japan (4-1), plunging the “Team” in a deep crisis.

Since its semi-final lost against France in Marseille during Euro 2016, Germany has suffered a gradual downgrading with elimination in the first round of the 2018 World Cup and the 2022 World Cup and a round of 16 at Euro 2021.
