The Brandenburg Gate in the marijuana fog, a giant joint on the Warsaw Bridge – activists celebrated the legalization of cannabis on Monday night. The drug can be freely consumed in public from April.

Numerous people celebrated the legalization of cannabis in front of the Brandenburg Gate on the night of Easter Monday. As the police told rbb, around 1,500 people gathered in front of the well-known landmark.

“At 12 point the plumes went up. The Brandenburg Gate was pretty much in the fog,” said Henry Plottke, a member of the Berlin branch of the German Cannabis Association (DHV), on Monday. The meeting was organized by the local group. Registered for the event under the motto “Cannabis Normal!” were 200 people.

Several joints were lit at midnight. Shortly afterwards, a strong smell of cannabis wafted across the square. A meter-high cannabis leaf could be seen and some people danced to reggae music. “That was a great atmosphere,” said hemp activist Plottke. According to police reports, the event ended around 12:40 a.m. For Plottke, being able to legally smoke a joint in front of the Brandenburg Gate was a key event. As a consumer, he feels “a lot of relief” about no longer being considered a criminal.

There was also a celebration on the Warsaw Bridge. At midnight, activists from the Cannabis Museum and the umbrella organization of German Cannabis Social Clubs (CSCD) lit a joint. “The first legal one,” said museum director Steffen Geyer, calling legalization “the fulfillment of a long dream.” Later, a particularly large joint was lit and passed around to cheers. The police were initially not aware of any further demonstrations or abnormalities on Monday morning. Numerous events are planned for Easter Monday.

People over the age of 18 are allowed to carry up to 25 grams of dried cannabis with them without penalty. They are allowed to store up to 50 grams at home and grow up to three cannabis plants for their own consumption.

Cannabis can be freely consumed in public from April. However, there are exceptions. Smoking is not permitted within 100 meters of children’s and youth facilities such as schools. Smoking weed is also not allowed in the immediate vicinity of minors. In public buildings or restaurants, house rules must be observed. Free sale, as is the case in many US states, remains prohibited.
