South Africa: Cyclone Freddie, which hit the poor country of Malawi last week, led to the death of over 500 people and nearly 400,000 refugees.

The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwara, appealed to the countries of the world for help: “We need everyone’s help in order to be able to deal with this tragedy. We are suffering and we have no means to pay the price. We have set up temporary camps but food, shelter and medicine are necessary.”

The president also said: “Those who were looking for proof of the climate crisis, we stand in the midst of it. Such a crisis could leave Malawi in a cycle of perpetual poverty.” At the same time, the country announced 14 days of mourning during which many memorial ceremonies will be held in memory of the martyrs.
