Some 300 people demonstrated this Sunday in the center of Madrid against the King Emeritus Juan Carlos I, whose visit to Spain after almost two years of exile persecuted by information about the opaque origin of his fortune has been criticized. With republican flags and banners that read “Justice” o “The Bourbon in prison”the protesters gathered in a square in front of the Royal Theater, a few blocks from the Royal Palace, to repudiate the figure of the former head of state between 1975 and 2014. Juan Carlos de Borbón, who has held the title of king emeritus since he abdicated in favor of his son in 2014, he returned to Spain last Thursday for the first time after he left in August 2020, after learning about his controversial business abroad and possible illegalities in them.
That year, the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office opened three investigations: for alleged millionaire commissions for the works of the high-speed train between Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia, for a case of alleged undeclared donations and another of possible concealment of funds in tax havens, although in March of this year they were filed. The government of the socialist Pedro Sánchez insists that Juan Carloswho abdicated in 2014 persecuted by scandals, must still give “explanations”.
