Nearly half a million migrants residing in the United States without documentation will be eligible for regular status under the latest program launched by President Joe Biden.

This means that thousands of undocumented immigrants, without legal status, can apply for permanent residence (green card) and, in some cases, citizenship.

This program also takes into account driving licenses and employment authorizations in the United States (EAD).

The project aims to benefit, primarily, those people who are married to US citizens, in a context where migration management is of great importance to the population.

Such applications can be submitted by the end of the summer, but the fees have not yet been determined, according to senior officials in the Democratic administration.

Some 500,000 immigrants are projected to benefit from the new policy. They must have lived in the United States for at least ten years and be married to a U.S. citizen. After their application is approved, within three years they will be eligible for a green card, receive a temporary work permit and be protected from deportation.

Within this number, it is estimated that some 50,000 non-citizen children, whose parents are married to US citizens, could also qualify. “There is no requirement regarding the duration of the marriage, but only immigrants who have completed ten years of residency by June 17, 2024 qualify,” they specify.

At a White House event scheduled for this afternoon, Biden will officially announce the program, taking advantage of the twelfth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which during the Obama administration provided protection against deportation and granted temporary work permits to young undocumented immigrants.
