Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticized this Friday (16) the European Union’s (EU) plan to more evenly distribute the reception to asylum seekers, comparing the measure with deportations in times of war.

The nationalist leader, contrary to the recent agreement establishing a solidarity mechanism between Member States to welcome refugees, denounced “rules that give Brussels the right to decide how to distribute migrants”.

“Are they going to take migrants in Germany who don’t want to come here, arrest them, transport them in wagons and unload them in our country?” asked Orban.

“All countries that do not allow the entry of migrants will be forced to do so”, he denounced, in an interview with a pro-government communication vehicle.

The opposition was quick to denounce a “shameful parallelism with the Holocaust”.

Under the proposed reform, member states would have to host a number of asylum seekers arriving in an EU country subjected to migratory pressure, especially Italy, Greece and Spain, or pay a financial contribution of €20,000 per person. (105 thousand reais at the current exchange rate).

The vote needs the endorsement of 15 of the 27 member countries, representing at least 65% of the EU’s population. Poland and Hungary voted against.

The agreement reached paves the way for negotiations with the European Parliament, with a view to adopting the reform before the European elections in June 2024.
