Right to vote

Fidesz seems serious about plans to establish new constituencies abroad.

The liberal news portal valaszonline.hu picked up information cited by political newcomer Péter Magyar in July: According to this, the government is examining legal options to establish individual constituencies for Hungary abroad. This should be done according to the French model.

Since 2014, Hungarians who do not live in the mother country have been able to vote, and among them Fidesz tends to win more than 90% of the vote. However, Hungarians abroad had only one vote for the election from state lists and therefore can influence a maximum of two mandates in the parliament. If individual constituencies were allowed, Hungarians abroad could determine seven direct mandates. Background: With the more active votes, Fidesz could better consolidate its power against growing opposition formations such as Tisza Péter Magyar’s party.
