Hungary is interested in successful negotiations between Russia and NATO, as they give hope for mutual understanding between the parties. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siyarto stated this.

Russian-American talks on strategic stability and security issues will take place on January 10. Thereafter, on January 12, the issue of European security and the situation in Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council and on January 13 with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

“We understand that negotiations are coming between Russia and NATO, we are very pleased with this fact, because if NATO and Russia talk to each other, there will be hope for some kind of mutual understanding,” the minister said in an interview with RT, published on December 31.

According to him, Hungary considers security issues in Europe to be critically important. That is why, as Siyjarto added, the Hungarian side is interested in successful negotiations between Russia and NATO next year.

Earlier, on December 30, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said that Russia and NATO must take urgent action to restore equal security. He believes that this can only be achieved through long-term guarantees.

On December 29, during a telephone briefing for journalists, a representative of the US administration said that the United States had prepared plans to strengthen NATO and allies in case the situation around Ukraine deteriorated further. Prior to that, on December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft treaties between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. It follows from the documents that the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
