Hungary is preparing a major military-industrial contract with Sweden, which could open the country’s path to NATO. This was reported by the Internet publication Index with reference to its sources. It also reports on the Swedish embassy’s preparations for the visit of the country’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to Budapest, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“In recent weeks, intensive negotiations have been held between the governments of Sweden and Hungary, and a major contract between military-industrial enterprises is currently being prepared,” the publication noted.

It suggested that the agreement could cover Swedish Gripen fighter jets, which are already used by the Hungarian Air Force. Hungary has 14 of these aircraft leased from Sweden. Their lease expires in 2026, after which they will become the property of Hungary. Index also reported that “the Swedish Embassy in Hungary is already actively preparing for the Prime Minister’s visit, so a visit can be expected in the near future.” Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban invited his Swedish counterpart to Budapest to discuss, in particular, his country’s admission to NATO.
