Does ‘The Hunger Games’ Still Pack a Punch Without Katniss Everdeen?

A look at “The Song of the Bird and the Snake” and whether the prequel lives up to the original series.

  • “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” offers a compelling look at a young Coriolanus Snow.
  • Despite the absence of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen, the film successfully expands the world of Panem.
  • Filming locations in Germany, including Berlin’s Olympic Stadium and Altes Museum, add a unique visual layer.
  • A new prequel, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” focusing on Haymitch Abernathy, is slated for release in November 2026.

Jennifer Lawrence’s portrayal of Katniss Everdeen captivated audiences in “The Hunger Games” series, but when the first prequel, “The Song of the Bird and the Snake,” arrived in theaters in November 2023, many wondered: could Panem thrive without its iconic heroine? The answer, it turns out, is a resounding yes.

A Long-Awaited Return to Panem

As a longtime fan of the series—having devoured Suzanne Collins’ books starting with “Deadly Games” in 2008 and revisiting each film multiple times—I approached the prequel with a mix of excitement and trepidation. Initially, the prospect of a story centered on President Snow, a character I’ve always found deeply unlikeable, didn’t immediately appeal. However, delving into the book in 2020 revealed a nuanced understanding of his origins, and I found myself increasingly invested in his transformation.

Sympathy for the Villain?

The film, starring Tom Blyth as a young Coriolanus Snow, exceeded my expectations. Blyth delivers a captivating performance, portraying a charismatic and ambitious young man driven by a desire to succeed and protect the woman he loves. It’s surprisingly easy to find oneself sympathizing with Snow’s struggles, even while knowing the darkness that awaits him.

Lucy Gray Baird Shines

Rachel Zegler’s portrayal of Lucy Gray Baird is equally compelling. She embodies the character’s strength, vulnerability, and captivating stage presence perfectly. Zegler’s singing adds another layer of depth to the performance, making Lucy Gray a truly unforgettable character.

A Familiar Yet Fresh Setting

The film’s setting is visually striking, and I was particularly delighted to recognize several locations in Germany where scenes were filmed. Having lived in Berlin for years, spotting the Olympic Stadium and the Altes Museum felt like a personal connection to the story.

A Captivating Narrative

Despite its lengthy runtime of two hours and 37 minutes, the film maintains a brisk pace and keeps viewers thoroughly engaged. I found myself completely absorbed in the narrative, and Katniss Everdeen barely crossed my mind. “The Hunger Games” absolutely works without Jennifer Lawrence, proving the richness and complexity of Collins’ world extends far beyond a single protagonist.

Looking Ahead to “Sunrise on the Reaping”

Fans won’t have to wait long for the next installment. “Sunrise on the Reaping,” the second prequel, is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. The film will center on a young Haymitch Abernathy (played by Joseph Zada) and his experiences in the 50th Hunger Games. Notably, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are reportedly set to appear in a “flash-forward” scene as Katniss and Peeta.

I’m already eagerly anticipating this next chapter. Having read “The Hunger Games L – The Day Breaks,” I’m particularly excited to see Haymitch’s story brought to life on screen.
