Hunkkaar: Aneet Padda and Fatima Sana Shaikh Lead New JioHotstar Thriller

Aneet Padda and Fatima Sana Shaikh lead the upcoming socio-thriller Hunkkaar: The Roar, which explores a high-stakes legal and media battle after a 17-year-old student accuses a powerful cult leader of assault. The JioHotstar series is set to premiere on September 25, 2026.

The cultural conversation around power, institutional authority, and public perception takes center stage as JioHotstar prepares to roll out its high-stakes socio-thriller. Centered on a single, explosive legal complaint, the project brings together an ensemble cast and a prominent creative team to examine how modern media scrutiny and systemic influence shape the pursuit of justice.

An Allegation That Sparks a National Reckoning

The narrative begins when 17-year-old Meenu Rawat, a student at Mahasherni School located inside the fortified grounds of Shaburi Fort, steps into a police station. Portrayed by Aneet Padda, Meenu formally accuses a revered spiritual guru—Sunil Chakosi, popularly known as Baapji, and played by Raghubir Yadav—of abuse and sexual assault. What starts as an initial police complaint quickly spirals into an intense multi-front confrontation involving law enforcement, the judiciary, and relentless media coverage.

As the investigation unfolds, Meenu finds herself resisting the rigid expectations placed on survivors.

Inside the Investigation, Courtroom, and Media Trials

The series splits its narrative across three distinct battlegrounds: the police investigation, the courtroom proceedings, and the court of public opinion.

Legal and journalistic fronts expand the conflict further. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub portrays an underdog attorney described in news.abplive.com as the only lawyer who believes Meenu in this country, while Ram Kapoor steps into the role of Baapji’s defense counsel. Alongside them, Arjun Mathur plays a television journalist tracking every twist of the case.

Behind the Scenes and Star-Studded Production

The project is directed by Karan D Kapadia, Nitya Mehra, and Heeraz Marfatia, with Karan D Kapadia and Nitya Mehra also serving as creators. Production duties are shared by Birla Studios and Applause Entertainment, in association with Purple Pebble Pictures and Mangata Films Production. Notably, Priyanka Chopra Jonas serves as an executive producer on the series.

“As a producer, I’ve always wanted to stand behind stories that have something to say, and Hunkkaar: The Roar is very much that. I also really believe in Nitya and Karan as filmmakers. I’m incredibly proud of what this entire cast and crew has created, and it’s been a privilege to be a small part of this journey. I hope the story stays with audiences the way it stayed with me.”

Reflecting on her casting during recent promotional appearances in Mumbai covered by Bollywood Hungama, Padda noted that she was only 19 years old when she auditioned for the demanding role.

“Meenu isn’t defined by what happened to her, but by what she chooses after. She’s young, complicated and not always easy to understand, that’s what makes her real. Her one constant? A refusal to be silenced. I hope audiences see her vulnerability and the defiance at the heart of her journey.”
