Hunting the oligarchs: saved three times from assassination attempts

Igor Sichev evaded three assassination attempts ordered by Russian oligarchs. The 47-year-old father of two received a chilling phone call threatening the lives of his children. “Next time you will lose your wife and children.” He is required to stop trying to expose the oligarchs

A Russian man evaded three assassination attempts by Putin’s oligarchs, who repeatedly sabotaged and destroyed his Jeep, he told the Daily Mail. Father-of-two Igor Sichev, 47, used to work for Russian billionaire Andrei Guriev’s chemical company, and has long opposed Vladimir Putin.

In phone calls, Sichev was told that the lives of his wife and children would be in danger unless he stopped trying to expose the oligarchs.

His former employer, Guriev, is under sanctions in Britain and elsewhere for his links to the Russian regime, with a fortune of £8.3 billion and owning the second largest estate in London, the only house bigger than Guriev’s is Buckingham Palace. After seeking political asylum in Latvia, Sichev took Andrey Guriev to the UK court.

Sychev, now an oligarch himself, is one of the top donors to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and has given the political prisoner at least $1.5 million.

After Sichev helped Guriev’s company get out of a tax evasion case in Russia, Sichev said the company promised him a significant bonus of 1 percent of the company’s value in 2018. According to him, the company never paid him and he started legal proceedings. Now, he has asked Britain’s National Crime Agency to prosecute his enemies for attempted murder, corruption and bribery after they “tried to kill him”, “bribed his lawyers” and “threatened to kill his wife and children”.

He said that the pressure from the oligarchs tore his family apart and caused his divorce, however, he wanted to make it clear that he is no longer in contact with them to ensure their safety. As mentioned, the threats and assassination attempts began when Sichev took the oligarchs to court for acts of corruption. He said: “The oligarchs repeatedly threatened to kill me, and demanded that I cancel this lawsuit or refer it to people connected to the oligarchs.”

He added: “I don’t feel safe, I regularly receive anonymous threats by phone, instant messages and email.” He even got an email to book his own funeral plan at a £500 discount.
