“Beryl” briefly reached the most dangerous category 5 on Monday evening as a “potentially catastrophic” hurricane, but later lost some of its intensity and became a category 4 storm again, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Tuesday afternoon.

Beryl, with winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour, is now a Category 4 hurricane, just short of the Category 5 limit of 251 kilometers per hour, the NHC said.

Beryl made landfall on Grenada’s Karriaku Island on Monday morning as a Category 4 hurricane. It wreaked havoc on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, destroying homes and severing power and telecommunications lines.

Heavy rains and strong winds also affected Grenada’s neighboring island nations, including St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia, as well as territory in Venezuela.

The confirmed death toll from the hurricane has risen to six, with three deaths in Grenada, two in Venezuela and one in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night and Thursday, the NHC said in its latest warning.
