Hurricane Beryl in Category 3 has weakened slightly and now has winds of about 190 km / h, according to the update of the National Hurricane Center at 5:00 am Miami.
The weather is deteriorating in the Cayman Islands with strong winds, dangerous swells and damaging waves expected this morning. Tropical storms are in full swing and hurricane status is expected soon.
The Cayman Islands can also expect a storm surge that could raise water levels up to 0.6 to 1.2 meters above normal tide levels and produce rainfall totals of 10 to 15 cm, leading to flooding.
Jamaica suspended its hurricane warning as Beryl moved off the island.
Looking ahead: Beryl will reach the Yucatan Peninsula early Friday as a hurricane and emerge in the southern Gulf of Mexico early Saturday as a tropical storm. The storm is likely to regain some intensity in the warm waters of the Gulf as it approaches another landfall on the coast of Mexico or Texas early next week.
Tropical storm conditions will reach the Yucatan Peninsula later today, potentially becoming hurricane conditions by early Friday. Beryl is expected to bring a storm surge of 1.2 to 1.8 meters and rainfall totals of 10 to 15 cm, with up to 25 cm in localized spots.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, and the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, including Cozumel.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula south from Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal and from Cancún north to Campeche.
