Tropical storm “Debby” expectedly brought strong winds and heavy rains to the state of Florida today, as well as a surprise: 25 carefully wrapped packages of cocaine worth more than one million dollars, reported AFP, quoted by BTA.

Debbie made landfall today in the northwest part of the state as a Category 5 hurricane before being downgraded to a tropical storm.

Further south, its waves caused a clandestine shipment of cocaine to run aground in the Keys, the state’s southernmost islands.

“Debbie” dumped 25 packages of cocaine (about 32 kg in total) on the beach in the Florida Keys, Samuel Briggs, the local chief of the border police, reported on the X social network.

The shipment, worth more than one million dollars, was discovered by a pedestrian who alerted the authorities, he added.

Debbie killed one person in Florida and caused widespread power outages that affected tens of thousands of residents.

According to authorities, the storm could bring record rainfall and catastrophic flooding.

The Keys archipelago is located near several Caribbean countries that serve as a hub for cocaine trafficking between South America, North America and Europe.
