Hwang Hee-chan (28), a striker for Wolverhampton in the English Premier League (EPL), was subjected to racial abuse by an opposing team player during a pre-season friendly match.
On the 16th, Wolverhampton announced on their club website, “We won 1-0 against (Italian Serie A) Como 1907 with a header from Matthew Doherty,” but “the victory was tarnished when Hwang Hee-chan received racist remarks.”
He continued, “Daniel Podence was sent off after reacting violently to Hwang Hee-chan’s racist remarks, but Wolverhampton went on to win.”
Wolverhampton played a friendly match against Como in Marbella, Spain, their training camp, on the 15th (local time). Hwang Hee-chan, who was on the bench in the first half of the match, was brought onto the field at the start of the second half.
Hwang Hee-chan was subjected to racist remarks from an opposing team player in the 23rd minute of the second half. This angered teammate Daniel Podence, who was sent off for punching the player who made the racist remark.
Wolverhampton manager Gary O’Neill asked Hwang Hee-chan if he would mind playing on, and Hwang agreed to play until the end.
After the match, Manager O’Neill said, “Hwang Hee-chan was subjected to racist remarks,” and added, “It’s disappointing that this situation occurred. It should never have happened.”
He continued, “I am proud that Hwang Hee-chan puts the team first despite the humiliating experience,” and “Hwang Hee-chan receives full support from his teammates.”
Wolverhampton said: “Any form of racism is unacceptable and we will be taking this matter to UEFA.”
